King George's Medical University is situated in the heart of the historic city of Lucknow which is the capital of India 's most populous state Uttar Pradesh. 

As the institution grew, more and more departments were created in new buildings. Therefore the campus really consists of a conglomeration of buildings housing the various departments, which came up over a period of 100 years as and when the need was felt. There are separate buildings for Medicine, Surgery, Pediatrics, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Cardiology, Neurology, Psychiatry, Neurosurgery, Plastic Surgery, Rheumatology, Geriatric Mental Health, Surgical Oncology, Chest Medicine, Pathology, Pharmacology, Anaesthesiology, Opthalmology, Urology and Community Medicine. Cardiothoracic Surgery is presently in the Chest Medicine building, Microbiology along with Pathology and Biochemistry along with Physiology.

The King George's Medical College was upgraded to the Medical University by the Govt. of U.P. on 16th September 2002 and Research Cell was reorganized and revamped. There is a vibrant research environment in the University. There are currently more than 200 ongoing extramurally funded research projects awarded to faculty of 32 departments by national funding agencies like Department of Health research (DHR); Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), Department Biotechnology (DBT); Department of Science & Technology (DST); UP Council of Science & Technology (UPCST) and international funding agencies like World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF, Bill & Melinda Gates foundation etc. and private pharmaceutical and Clinical Research Organizations. All extramurally funded projects are managed through the Research Cell.
