National Research Foundation to transform India's research landscape

India's Union Cabinet has approved a draft bill to establish the National Research Foundation (NRF) to foster research and innovation across the nation's universities, colleges, institutions and laboratories. 

The NRF was proposed as part of the National Education Policy to provide strategic direction of scientific research in the country with an estimated budget of Rs. 50,000 crore over five years.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Science and Technology, the national agency will focus on a policy framework and regulatory processes to encourage collaboration and increased industry spending  on Research and Development (R&D).
