Researcher Spotlight: Xavier Conlan

Get to know the people involved in ARCH-India. From senior experts to early career researchers, learn about their careers, what makes them tick, and how they are collaborating.

Associate Professor Xavier Conlan is the Associate Head of School (Research and Industry Engagement) at Deakin University in Victoria, Australia. An expert in analytical chemistry, Dr Conlan is currently applying his craft to solve problems in agriculture, plant science, industrial chemistry and forensic science. He hosts a popular science radio show under the alias Dr X. He has worked closely on several major projects, primarily based at TERI-Deakin Nanobiotechnology Centre in Gurugram, India.

What gets you excited about work? I love engaging with people and good science brings people together. I enjoy the technical challenges of designing new equipment and methodologies to solve people’s problems.

What sparked your interest in your field? I have always loved enquiring into things and as a child I loved doing my own experiments, particularly those that involved fire and explosions.

How are you collaborating with colleagues in India? My network has built overtime and I like to collaborate in both a formal manner through planned programs and through connecting informally.

I especially love the side collaborations that involve cricket score updates.

What does successful research collaboration look like? A successful collaboration is when both parties have achieved something with a mutual outcome, be that a product, a new approach to science or the graduation of a student.

What is your favourite place to visit in India? When in India, I really like visiting previous students’ houses and meeting their families. The ‘Paradise’ biryani restaurant in Hyderabad also has a soft spot in my heart.

Who is your favourite Indian personality? Harsha Bhogle is my favourite Indian cricket commentator and journalist. He has such a great voice.
